Because hunger doesn't have a Summer Break 

COMBATING SUMMER HUNGER

Everyone needs to eat and healthy food options should be available year round. Special Needs Disability Center Inc, is on the front-lines of the fight against hunger in Dallas with our Summer Meals Program!

We provide food and smiles, free of charge to the areas we serve through partnership with our sponsors. Nutritious meals are delivered at each community's schedule during the breakfast and lunch hour. Participating communities, schools, churches,and programs will receive fliers as well.  We are committed to providing resources and food to the residents Dallas County!

Missing meals and experiencing hunger impair children's overall development and achievement.
Studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Pediatrics, and the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry document the negative effects of hunger on children’s academic performance and behavior in school. Hungry children are more likely to have lower math and reading scores. They are also are more likely to repeat a grade, come to school late, or miss it entirely. 6 out of 7 children don't get the summer meals they need.
Millions of children rely heavily on school for regular and nutritious meals. During the summer, those meals stop. With up to 20% of Dallas, Texas actively functioning as a food desert, there's very little chance that children will be able to acquire healthy foods or nutritious options for themselves. Food desert also impede many parents from finding healthy nutrition for their children as well. To learn more about food deserts in Dallas, click here.
43% of low income families find it more difficult to make ends meet during the summer.
The ability to provide children with healthy food year round costs money. 22.9% of Dallas citizens live in poverty with 44.14% of those citizens living in food deserts. Meaning 1 out of every 4.6 people in Dallas live in poverty and don't have adequate resources  or access to healthy foods. To learn more about Dallas poverty and it's effects, click here.
